Opponents of gay marriage have told the Supreme Court that only opposite-sex marriages should be legal because only they can "produce unplanned and unintended offspring."

To further their "reasoning," Paul D. Clement, a lawyer for the House Republicans, said that "substantial advance planning is required" when same-sex couples want to have or adopt
