12 Years Ago Today: Same-Sex Marriage Legalized In The Netherlands



On April 1, 2001, the Netherlands became the first country to allow same-sex marriage.

That day, four couples were married by Job Cohen, the mayor of Amsterdam.

As of April 2013, there are currently thirteen countries that allow marriage between those of the same sex and a few - including the United States - that allow gay marriage in certain jurisdictions or states.
